TEB.ID: Collaboration for a Just Energy Transition

The Just Energy Transition Indonesia Platform (TEB.ID) is an information hub that provides in-depth insights into just energy transition issues in Indonesia.

Launched in January 2024, TEB.ID was created to meet the ever-evolving need for information as public attention to the issue of a just energy transition continues to grow.

The platform organizes just energy transition issues into five main focus areas:

  1. Policy: Focuses on providing information on government laws, policies, and regulations, including international financing initiatives that support a just energy transition, such as the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).
  2. Workers’ Rights: Focuses on protecting workers’ rights in the energy sector, including access to decent work, social protection, reskilling and upskilling opportunities, and efforts to ensure that the energy transition does not result in job losses or deteriorating working conditions.
  3. Finance: Financing is one of the most critical aspects of a just energy transition. TEB.ID explores topics such as financing the early retirement of coal-fired power plants, investing in renewable energy generation and grid infrastructure, and the role of public and private investment in accelerating a just energy transition.
  4. Community: The opportunities and challenges of a just energy transition for directly-affected communities (the general public, indigenous peoples, vulnerable groups, etc.) will be among TEB.ID’s key focuses, using the GEDSI (Gender, Disability, and Social Inclusion) approach.
  5. Transition Minerals: Discussions surrounding transition minerals are intensifying due to the development of renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles. TEB.ID will focus on how transition minerals can be managed in a fair and sustainable manner.

The Process of a Just Energy Transition in Indonesia

Indonesia has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, or sooner, and is developing a long-term strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In September 2022, the government issued Presidential Regulation No. 112/2022 to accelerate renewable energy development, establish a roadmap for the early retirement of coal-fired power plants, and prohibit the construction of new coal-fired power plants, except those dedicated to industrial purposes.

In November 2022, the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) was launched by Indonesia and its international partners under the International Partners Group (IPG) during the G20 Summit in Bali. One of JETP’s primary objectives is to accelerate renewable energy deployment, support the early retirement of coal-fired power plants, and build a stronger renewable energy ecosystem in Indonesia.

President Prabowo Subianto has also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to the energy transition, stating that the country is prepared to add 75 GW of renewable energy capacity and phase out coal within the next 15 years. He made this statement before hundreds of world leaders at the G20 Summit in Brazil in November 2024.
